Reader is a feed reader in the spirit of Google Reader: subscribe to the RSS and Atom feeds you care about and read everything in one place, with your read and saved status tracked per item. Open Reader from the navigation bar.

Subscribing

Open Manage (top of the feed list) and paste a feed address. A site's home page works too — KTO looks for the feed the page advertises. Give the feed your own name or drop it into a folder if you like; you can change both later from the same page.

Feeds are fetched once an hour. If a feed stops responding its status shows next to it on the manage page (healthy, degraded, broken) along with the last error, and KTO backs off a broken feed to one attempt a day until it recovers.

Import takes an OPML export from Google Reader, Feedly, Inoreader, NewsBlur and most other readers, or the tab-separated rss_feeds.log table dump. Folders in the file are created for you, feeds you already follow are skipped, and new feeds fill in as they are fetched in the background. Export gives you the same list back as OPML.

Reading

The feed list on the left shows All items (everything you follow, newest first), Saved, your folders and each feed, each with its unread count. Pick a view and the items appear in the middle; select one and it opens in the preview pane on the right and is marked read. On a phone the list and the preview take turns filling the screen, and the feed list slides in from the left.

Links in an article open in a new tab. Switch between Unread and All, and Newest or Oldest first, from the toolbar; Reader remembers your choice.

Mark all read and Mark all unread act on the current view (everything, a folder or one feed) and always ask you to confirm first. Items that arrive while the question is open stay unread.

Save keeps an item in Saved for later; saved items are never removed, even after they drop out of their feed.

Refresh fetches the current feed — or every feed, from the All items view — right away instead of waiting for the hourly fetch, at most once every five minutes.

Privacy

Feeds are public documents, so a feed you and another KTO user both follow is downloaded once and shared; what you have read or saved is yours alone and never visible to anyone else. Unsubscribing removes your marks for that feed, and a feed nobody follows any more is deleted entirely. Your subscriptions, folders and marks are included in Export my data and removed by account deletion like every other section.
